Google Search
As of around 2024 or so, I don’t really use Google Search anymore. At least not directly. I switched to DuckDuckGo for a while, and I currently use Kagi (Kagi.com, see /kagi for my notes on it). Kagi, however, does use Google’s indexes a lot of the time.
Miscellaneous annoyances
- As of 2025-03-14, Google Search no longer works without JavaScript, which means you can’t use it from a text-based browser like Emacs’s EWW.
-
Google Search used to show you the URL, now it doesn’t.
In fact, it tends to overwrite the URL with its own tracking URL.
Sometimes this means that you can’t see visited links as purple, because Google’s overwriting it with a different URL.
- I don’t think Google is now incentivized to give you the URL. I don’t think they want people to know what a URL is, and instead rely on Google for finding anything.
