Have you heard of Emacs? It doesn’t matter what your answer is because I’m gonna talk about it anyway. ;P
Emacs is free software that is an extensible text editor, Lisp interpreter, email client, personal information manager, web browser, calculator, file manager, Unix shell, chat client, version control manager… Anything you want. The only limit is yourself.
Not sure what this page is. It’s probably just a portal to some of my other Emacs stuff.
My Emacs stuff
- My
.emacs
config is available at github.com/mm--/dot-emacs. - Have Emacs Teach You Chinese is a talk I gave in, like, 2016 at an Emacs NYC meetup. I talk about using org-drill and Elisp to automate some parts of spaced repetition (though in 2023 I usually use Anki, but still create some cards with Emacs). The slides are available here (or at /emacs1). And here’s the YouTube video for the presentation on Thoughtbot’s channel.

ace-mc was my first (and currently only) publicly released Emacs package. It allows you to add multiple cursors using
ace jump mode
. Here’s my mollermara.com ace-mc blog post that I made at the time. It still works in 2023, though ace jump mode is less favored these days thanavy
. Avy also lets you jump places but is more extensible. I think you could make an equivalent functionality to ace-mc in just a couple lines of configuration. - mollermara.com has my old Emacs blog posts.

Blogs
- Sacha Chua has a pretty good Emacs blog and newsletter
- Irreal’s blog is still going strong. It talks a lot about Emacs (Oh hey I’m mentioned here) but also things related to privacy.
- Protesilaos Stavrou has an interesting codelog
- Mickey Petersen at Mastering Emacs gets pretty in-depth about different parts of Emacs. He writes pretty well (and I should probably buy his book someday) and even covers fairly recent Emacs news in the development branch.
- Xah Lee has a lot about Emacs (and other stuff), some pages have good examples.
- Planet Emacslife aggregates a bunch of other Emacs blogs
- Emacs SF meetup meets occasionally at Haus Coffee on some Saturdays of the month. Originally started by Ryan Rix whose site also introduced me to Matrix.org.
- emacs.ch is an Emacs-centered Mastodon instance. I haven’t joined, but maybe I should.
- Android: Emacs on F-Droid (doesn’t have GnuTLS). Android ports for GNU Emacs on SourceForge by Jianwei Hu has GnuTLS support and an instructional README.
